ganeshmauritus.jpgVidianand Baree, who I refer to as Baree, had come to my site this year to find a story to share with his friends about Lord Ganesh, and from there we exchanged some thoughts on Lord Ganesh and learned about how we each celebrated the grand holiday of Ganesh Chathurthi.

Baree shared that Lord Ganesha is worshipped by all Hindus in Mauritius. Hinduism is the main culture of Mauritius (52%) and all the Hindus of Mauritius are of Indian Origin. His ancestors came to Mauritius around 200 years ago from Andhra Pradesh - South India.

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean south west of India and east of Madagascar.  Mauritius is an island surrounded by sea, so for Ganesha Chathurthi, all devotees join in processions from different villages and towns and all converge towards the beaches for the immersion ceremony. On the eve, Lord Ganesha Statues are blessed in various temples and households and these statues are taken to rivers and the sea.

The two main festivals in Mauritius are Diwali and Christmas and both of these are celebrated at the national level and different religions do mingle to celebrate.

Traditional oriental medicine - both from India and China - is commonly used both by the general public and in hotels for the sake of visitors and tourists.

Baree submitted four photos, three of which I made into a collage. To see full size versions of these photos, check out these and more photos on flickr.  You can also click on the photos on this page to see a larger version.
