My husband entered into our new  home with his dad, sister, brother-in-law and niece days before our marriage. I was absent from attending the Griha Pravesh Puja or Hindu housewarming ceremony because I could enter the home only after marriage. In our home’s blessing, no pujari or Hindu priest was called in, as many of our friends families have done, nor was a ‘party’ held, but my sister-in-law (Didi) took a pot and filled it partially with milk and waited for it to boil. Actually, it should ‘overboil’ to signify prosperity and overabundance of all things good, but then who will clean it? That was the funny irony I found in this approach!

I believe Didi did the best job anyone could have done in blessing and initiating our family’s life in our current home- living in this home, in the first six months as an extended family, and later as a married couple with extended visits from family (back home) in India and here in US, this has been one of the most warm, accepting and wonderful abodes I have lived in my life so far.

I share this story with you because of late many have come to Alaivani looking for information on different kinds of Hindu blessings for homes, cars, and others with specific hopes to find auspicious dates to hold housewarming rituals. To find this answer, I e-mailed Dad (my father-in-law) who could consult with our on-site family pujari for the answers required. I hope Pujarijis answer will help those who come to this page.

The 2010 mentioned below are all auspicious days in the months indicated.  These are generally for marriages, annaprasan (baby’s first feeding ceremony), naming of new born babies etc.  The highlighted dates for are for ceremonies connected with house warming, shifting of house etc.  You will observe that these are only in the months of March (past date, sorry) and December 2010.  It does not mean that there are no dates for ceremonies connected with houses.  The dates indicated are in general.

Normally Hindus consult the astrologer for finding a good an auspicious date and it is calculated by him by taking into account the birthstar of the person and other star configurations.   This is particularly done for starting house construction and even buying/selling a particular house.

2011 Dates
January   17th, 22nd
February    4th, 8th, 18th
March  2nd, 21st
April    No Days
May      9th
June  to October    No days
November   7th, 22nd, 29th
Deccember      ==

2010 Dates
March 2010 :   11,  12,  17, 19, 22, 23
April 2010:   1, 3, 19, 21,
May 2010:    3, 16, 23, 24, 26
June 2010:    21, 26
July 2010:  4, 5, 21, 28
September 2010:   3, 6, 10, 12, 21, 23, 29
October 2010:   2
November 2010:    23, 26, 28
December  2010:    1,  2, 3, 10, 11

No auspicious ceremony or good things are done or started during Rahukala, which is for 1 hour and 30 minutes every day at different times of each day:
Monday:  7.30am – 9am
Tuesday:  3.00 – 4.30 pm
Wednesday: 12 noon – 1.30 pm
Thursday:  1.30 – 3.00 pm
Friday:  10.30am – 12 noon
Saturday: 9.00 – 10.30 am
Sunday:  4.30 – 6.00 pm.

You will observe that Rahukalam starts at 7.30 in the morning and ends at 6.00pm
Staggering 1 hour and 30 minutes each day (not in order).  The only thing is Rahukalam starts on a Monday and ends on a Sunday and in between the days are all jumbled up.   In order to remember the sequence of days, so that the timings are contiguous, the easy formula to remember the quote is :

“Mother    Saw       Father       Wearing   The         Turban on  Sunday”
Monday   Sat.        Friday       Wed.        Thurs.     Tuesday     Sunday
 7.30am   9.00am   10.30am    12 noon    1.30pm   3.00 pm     4.30pm—6.00pm
(start)                                                                                     (end)

I hope you will be able to make out something out of this and also understand the calculation formula of Rahukala.  Welcome for any clarification. Please leave your thoughts, comments or questions in the comments section below.

Re: Auspicious Dates to Bless Your House Under Hindu Traditions for Calendar Year 2010

Hello Allaivani,

Very haapy to know ur blog. I am living in China now. I am supposed to shift my house on 23rd may or 24th may. I would like to know whether the rahukalam time remains the same even in China? For example if on Monday the rahukalam time is 7.30-9am in India, will it be the same time in China too or will we have to adjust acording to the time zone?China time is 2.5hrs ahead than India.
Your response will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Adarshni

Hi Adarshni - The time (astrologically speaking) would be local time whereever it is.

Re: Auspicious Dates to Bless Your House Under Hindu Traditions for Calendar Year 2010

Hello Allaivani,Can you tell me the appropriate gift for a house blessing.Thank you,Diane

Diane, Thanks for stopping by.
I take something that can be used by the resident or useful to them. Maybe a small household appliance (vaccuum, grinder, blender, rice cooker, slow cooker, etc.) or a gift card to a department store. Some people also take statues of religious figurines. If they are Hindus, you may need to ask about it first because different families have different taboos or good luck attached to different gods. Hope that's helpful. Let me know what you decide and how it goes!

Re: Auspicious Dates to Bless Your House Under Hindu Traditions for Calendar Year 2010

Hello there--- I ran across your blog while searching the internet for information. My new neighbors have recently moved in. Beautiful couple. They have drawn chalk drawings outside their door- Friday. I knew it was a blessing, but not much more than that. My neighbor brought us over some wonderful food. I asked what the chalk drawing meant- which blessing. She said it was for the Friday. It was to ask for money/prosperity and good energy. Our family would love to give a house warming gift. If there is anyone, that has an idea what would be appropriate... more to the point. We do not want to give anything that might inadvertently be offensive.

Typically, I'd make some sort of food.

I'd greatly appreciate it.
Maggie.

Auspicious dates in early September 2010

Hi,

I am planning to move to a new house in early September 2010. It has to be before the 10th because I have committed to leave my current apartment on or before the 10th to give way for the next tenant to move in on the 11th. Please tell me what is the procedure for an ideal gruhapravesam. I have no idea of what needs to be done. My DOB is 06.Oct.1985

Re: Auspicious Dates to Bless Your House Under Hindu Traditions for Calendar Year 2010

Hi Jennifer! My house is almost completely done and we are supposed to move in this September. Is it okay to just perform the ceremonies first of moving in and physically move in the new house on a later date?

What day do you think is auspicious for me and my family to move in? My DOB is January 11, 1974 and my husband's DOB is December 17, 1967. My other concern is my husband is working abroad and he could not join us. What should I need to do in his absence?

I am looking forward to hear from you.

Thank you.

Re: Auspicious Dates to Bless Your House Under Hindu Traditions for Calendar Year 2010

Bing, Hi. I am so sorry I did not see your message before. My blog did not 'ping me'!I think you'd be moved in by now. I wish I knew the answer for you. The only experience I had was that before I was married, my husband movedin a few days before the wedding. They went ahead with the house puja without me. I entered a few days later. I think the house puja is done differently based on the family/community?? I am assuming this as with my family all they did was boil milk, no real puja was done, no pujari called, But some of my friends who are hiring the pujari have a more elaborate event. Maybe pujari can answer your questions better?

If you do find your answers, can you share your answers? I'd be really curious to know how it went. My email is jenkumar@gmail.com
